Our new Advanced camping trip with a new route. Starting with the Turtle Islands and paddle through the South Island chain of Misool. It’s a more challenging long unsupported trip with only camping for all nights.

The Advanced trips always start on Monday afternoons and ends on Friday mornings the week after in Sorong. It is possible to arrive by flight the same day the trip starts. It should be possible to take the first early flights out the last day but NOTE that the ferry might be delayed.

A trip for those who want a challenge. A long unsupported trip at the outermost islands following the South Island chain.

Starting at the very remote Turtle Islands that has amazing snorkeling. We then kayak throughout the whole South Island chain visiting highlights like, a jellyfish lake, peak climbs, and more. At the end of the trip we will paddle to a homestay to stay for one night with the possibility to make an early trip to the Misool mainland jungle to see the Bird-of-Paradise and some ”urban” kayaking in the village of Yellu, a Papuan ”venice”

Itinerary

To be able to follow the places we will visit and stay during the trips please check the map of South-East Misool where we have put in the archipelagos, basecamps, homestays and Yellu.

Day 1 – Transport to Misool Island by night ferry, shared AC cabin included.
Day 2-3Kayak trip from Panun Island to the outermost ”Turtle islands”. Explore pristine coral reefs and jungle, long beaches, flying dog cave etc. 2 nights camping in a base camp. NOTE only if there is good weather! Plan B is to explore Balbulol island group from a basecamp there.
Day 4-10 – Kayak trip along Misool South island chain of karst with shark feeding station, coral reefs, lagoons, jellyfish lake, mountain peak hike etc. It’s very good snorkeling the whole way as the trip goes far out from Misool. 6 nights camping in 5 camps there last is a basecamp with 2 nights.
Day 10Paddle by some islands to a homestay close to Yellu and last night.
Day 11Relax day, SUP day or kayak Yellu, the ”Papuan Venice”. Option: make a Bird-of-Paradise trip. Transport to Sorong with night ferry, shared AC cabin included.
Day 12Arrive to Sorong in the early morning.

Day 1 (transport day) Monday

The trip starts by meeting at the ticket office in the ferry port at 21:00, 9 PM if you have not chosen the Sorong package or made other agreements with Millekul Adventures.  We could go for a joint dinner, shop at the supermarket etc. If so we will meet earlier in the afternoon in our guest house in Sorong. There you can also leave your bags. Contact us to make an agreement. The slow night ferry leaves 22:00, 10 PM from Sorong to Misool. Eat dinner before. The ferry only has a kiosk with snacks, noodle soup, soda and coffee. Sleep at a shared ferry cabin with AC.

Paddling the very far out Eden Islands

Day 2 (paddling day 1) Tuesday

The ferry arrives at Yellu around 7 AM. Breakfast at the ferry. Boat transport to Panun Island, 1 h. Boat from Panun with the kayaks to ”Eden Islands”, (50 min) where we test the kayaks and do rescue practices. We do some great snorkeling and have lunch. We continue by boat to the ”Turtle Islands” (50 min)and set up our base camp. In the afternoon we kayak around and explore small paradise islands, some with beautiful sand beaches. We will see many sea turtles. Night kayaking if we have good conditions. Approx. 10 km in empty kayaks. First night in a tent with fans at base camp ”Turtle Islands”.

Day 3 (paddling day 2) Wednesday

We start the day by amazing snorkeling of the best pristine coral reefs with very clear water. We kayak to the ”Great Turtle Island ” and walk on the long inhabited beaches that are untouched by man. Ideal nesting for endangered Green and Hawkbill turtles. If it’s possible due to the weather we kayak around the whole ”Great Turtle Island” with untouched dense jungle and many beaches for a lunch stop. In the afternoon we visit a cave with huge flying dogs and some blue mangrove bays. Night kayaking? Approx. 15-20 km with empty kayaks. Second night in a tent with fans at base camp ”Turtle Islands”.

If it’s bad weather and not possible to reach the very remote ”Turtle Islands” we will instead kayak from Panun, first explore nearby Chempada Islands and lunch there. Later kayak over to set up a basecamp in Balbulol Island group at Polasi Island. We will explore these amazing islands for 2 days with great snorkeling, many lagoons, huge Christmas trees, trekking up to a ridge and small peaks, visit fisherman settlement, swim in marine lakes etc. Approximately 10-15 km by full kayaks the first day and 10-15 km in empty kayaks the second day. 2 nights in a tent with fans at base camp Polasi Island.

Day 4 (paddling day 3) Thursday

We and our kayaks are picked up by boat from the “Turtle Islands” (or Balbulol Islands if plan B) and we are transported to the East end of the South Island chain (1 h). We set up a camp close to a ranger station in Yellit Island and you could experience a lot of reef sharks. It’s a shark feeding station. We meet the rangers who tell us about conservation of the reefs. We kayak around the closest islands and also do some great snorkeling, maybe with a lot of reef sharks. Approx. 10 km in empty kayaks. One night in a tent with fans at camp Yellit Island.

Day 5 (paddling day 4) Friday

We start our ”real kayak” trip by taking down camp and pack the kayaks for a long unsupported part. With fully loaded kayaks we go by several islands where the divers’ paradise are. We make 2 pcs of 3 km crossings with an island between. We will have lunch with amazing snorkeling on a small beach. After lunch we pass the only dive resort in Misool and kayak about 2 km over to the ”Crazy jumping fish” lagoon. We come to our nice beach at the end of Kaleg Island and set up camp with a beautiful sunset. Approx. 20 km by full kayaks. One night in a tent with fans at camp Kaleg Island.

Day 6 (paddling day 5) Saturday

We break the camp and continue to explore the island chain to the west. Today we start kayaking by some small islands over to bigger islands with a few lagoons. Here we will hike the Karawapop peak of ”Love lagoon” and if conditions are good we also visit a jellyfish lake. Lunch with good snorkeling. After lunch we make a 4 km crossing to Segaf Islands where we continue to explore some lagoons or go directly to a small island where we put up our camp on a very nice sunset beach, Olobi. Approx. 15-25 km by full kayaks depending on the choice of the route. One night in a tent with fans at camp Olobi.

Day 7 (paddling day 6) Sunday

Today you can start with a long snorkeling. We can relax this morning at this beautiful place. Later after taking down the camp we continue to explore the North Segaf Islands with lagoons. Lunch with snorkeling at the other end of Segaf Islands. After lunch we make a 3 km jump over to Wayil Islands or ”little Wayag” of Misool. A wonderful small island group with sugar peak karst islands, some Christmas trees and several lagoons. We explore this in and out and when we go to a nearby small island to set up a camp. Approx. 15 km by full kayaks. One night in a tent with fans at camp Wayil Islands.

Day 8 (paddling day 7) Monday

Today we will start by making the biggest crossing on the trip, 10 km of open water and 2 more km until we reach a safe beach at the ”Great Island”. If there is bad weather, heavy wind and waves we have the option to call in a boat transport. At a very beautiful beach we will have lunch and relax. We will explore the Northern coast with many nice beaches and some lagoons. We will take a break at a beach, maybe a snorkeling stop. 10 km more and we are at the western end where we will set up a basecamp. Approx. 20-25 km by full kayaks. First night in a tent with fans at base camp ”Great Island”.

Day 9 (paddling day 8) Tuesday

We explore the amazing ”Great Island” big lagoon with blue mangrove, channels, marine lakes, very high mountains etc. Lunch at a small beach with amazing snorkeling. This will be the first time snorkeling in Blue mangrove and coral walls at deep blue holes. We will also kayak up in the dense jungle under a high mountain. This will be the exciting end of our kayaking part of the South Island chain. It’s not many Western people who have seen the ”Great Island” and you are one of few to go kayaking here. Approx. 15 km with empty kayaks. Second night in a tent with fans at base camp ”Great Island”.

Day 10 (paddling day 9) Wednesday

Break the basecamp and kayak to Lalelkai Island closer to Yellu. It will be two bigger open distances. First 7,5 km over to the Facet islands there we will kayak around a little bit and have lunch. Relax and snorkeling if it’s possible due to the tide. It’s rather shallow around these islands. Continue to the islands south of Lalekai. Open water passage of approx. 9 km. Kayak through the island group and check in at Lalelkai homestay. First time we are eating dinner in a restaurant for over a week! Approx. 15 km with full kayaks. Sleep at Lalelkai homestay with AC.

Day 11 (alternative paddling day 10/transport day) Thursday

We have breakfast at Lalelkai homestay and after a day for relaxing, own activities such as snorkeling or SUPing or kayaking. If last we kayak further to the East and explore Yellu village over water, the ”Papuan Venice”?
Approx. 15 km paddling depending how far we go.

Boat transport to the ferry in Yellu and a dinner. The ferry goes at around 7 PM to Sorong. Sleep at a shared ferry cabin with AC.

It’s possible in the very early morning to make a Bird-of-Paradise trip to the jungle of Misool. Go by boat up in Gam river and trek in the jungle. Back to the homestay before lunch. If you want the best option, it could also be possible to go there the evening before for overnight in the jungle to wait for the birds. This is an extra activity and has to be paid in cash for the boat and special guides. Paid in cash also as it depends on the weather. If it rains, it could be canceled. Day 12 (transport day) Friday

We will arrive at Sorong around 04:00, 4 AM. It’s possible to sleep longer in the cabin with AC after an agreement with the ferry crew, so sleeping until 07:00 or 08:00 is possible. It should be possible to catch the first morning flights from Sorong airport and also take the 09:00, 9 AM Express ferry to Wasai. NOTE! The ferry might sometimes be delayed so a risk of miss flights!

The trip ends after departing the ferry or ends with a breakfast in the Millekul guesthouse in Sorong. If no other agreements are made with Millekul Adventures.
