The Millekul Adventures team is not only interested in the natural aspects of Misool, but also its people and culture. We understand that the connection between the land, its people, and their traditions is integral to the sustainability of this beautiful region.
Collaborating closely with the locals
The Islands and the lands in the Misool area are governed by Indonesian law but are neither state owned or privately owned. The Indonesian national law acknowledged traditional communal ownership rights to the lands, islands, and beaches in Misool to the local clans.
We at Millekul Adventures are committed to collaborating closely with these local clans. There are many clans that inhabit the islands of Misool and the surrounding archipelago. But in the area that Millekul Adventures is conducting the trips, there are five families. Three families which are the Matlau (coastal) families, and two families of the Matbat (inland) communities. For our boat support team, we use only local owned boats and local crews.
The homestays that we use are owned by these clans, and so are the beaches that we use as campsites, our lunch beaches, and even our jungle camp. We actually financed two of the homestays we use on our trips. We are very happy that one homestay that we financed expanded to 70% more occupancy, added biotanks for all bungalows, added a dining area and did maintenance. The other homestay, we supported during the hard times of the Covid 19 pandemic so it will not rundown during empty periods.
An integral part of life in Misool
We are also training the young Missolians to become our future guides or staff by doing kayaking trial days at senior high schools to introduce kayaking and training in tourism and English. From this seasonal event, we look for those who are interested to work with us.
Millekul Adventures aims to be an integral part of life in Misool, therefore we are making sure we are involved and contribute as much as we can. Since we always visit two villages on our trips, Millekul Adventures has donated many English school books, shoes and stationeries to the elementary schools of these villages. On each of our trips, we also provide our guests the opportunity to contribute to these schools. Some of our guests have also donated stationeries, some sports equipment, books, even sports clothing.
